Working Mother Cleared UPSC: Inspiring Journey of Balancing Family and Dreams
Last updated:
Being a working mother and preparing for UPSC simultaneously is one of the toughest challenges. This is my story of clearing UPSC 2024 at age 32 while managing a full-time job, a 5-year-old child, and household responsibilities.
My Background
- Age: 32 years
- Job: Bank Manager
- Family: Married with a 5-year-old daughter
- Available study time: 3-4 hours daily (mostly after 10 PM)
- Previous attempts: 2 (both times failed at Mains)
The Triple Challenge
Challenge 1: Limited Time
Between office (9 AM - 5 PM), daughter's school drop-pick up, cooking, and household chores, I barely had 3-4 hours for study - that too late night when everyone slept.
Challenge 2: Mom Guilt
Every hour spent studying felt like time stolen from my daughter. The constant guilt was emotionally draining.
Challenge 3: Energy Management
After a full day of work and parenting, finding energy to study at 10 PM was the biggest battle.
Why Previous Attempts Failed
First Attempt (2021)
- Tried expensive coaching (₹1.5 lakhs)
- Could not attend weekend classes (family time)
- Limited answer writing practice
- Result: Prelims cleared, Mains score 745/1750
Second Attempt (2022)
- Better preparation but still traditional methods
- Time management remained poor
- Result: Prelims cleared, Mains score 790/1750

1. You Do not Need 10 Hours Daily
Quality matters more than quantity. My 3-4 focused hours beat many aspirants' 8 distracted hours.
2. Family is Strength, Not Obstacle
My daughter's smile was motivation. My husband's support was fuel.
3. AI Democratizes UPSC
Without AI tools, working mothers like me could never compete. AI leveled the playing field.
4. Age is Just a Number
At 32, I was one of the older candidates. But maturity and life experience helped in interview and answer writing.

Message to Women Aspirants
Being a woman, a mother, or a working professional is not a disadvantage. Your life experience is an asset in UPSC.
The interview board was impressed by how I managed multiple responsibilities. They asked, "How will you manage District Magistrate job with family?" I said, "If I managed UPSC preparation with job and toddler, I can manage anything."
Final Thoughts
Do not let anyone tell you that you cannot clear UPSC because you are a mother, or working, or 30+. With smart strategy, family support, and AI tools, dreams are achievable.
My daughter now proudly tells her friends, "My mumma is going to be an IAS officer." That is the greatest achievement.
